The Birthstone Guide:
February represents a month of love with reds and pinks splashed all around. But in fact, the birthstone for February birthdays is purple! Amethyst is the gemstone for the month. This variety of quartz is available in an extensive variety of purple hes and lot of different shapes and sizes.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The word "amethyst" has Greek roots with the mythos surrounding the stone that it a person wearing the gemstone has the power of quick thought, a clear mind, and calm in the face of love. When worn as a birthstone it is said to "support personal empowerment and inner strength". The gemstone also can be seen throughout history on members of royalty from Catherine the Great to Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. (GIA, 2019)
Natural amethyst is mined from various parts of the world. Originally mined in Russia, the current active mines of note are located in South America, North America, and Africa. While natural amethyst used to be a rare gemstone it is now more readily available as is it's lab-created counterpart. The gemstone can also be heat treated to adjust the color of the stone.
DID YOU KNOW:
While amethyst is strong enough for everyday wear, it is best not to set the stone next to harder gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, or diamonds to support the longevity of the piece.
So Happy Birthday February! Choose your favorite purple shade and enjoy the gemstone just for you.
